A strong signal in support of public research in Quebec’s 2026–2027 budget
Axelys welcomes the Quebec government’s budget proposal, which recognizes the importance of leveraging public research as a driver of wealth creation and economic development for Quebec.
The announced measures, which allocate $17 million over three years to support the commercialization of public research, demonstrate the government’s commitment to strengthening the links between research, innovation, and their economic and societal impacts.
“Today, the strength of an economy no longer rests solely on its production capacity, but also on its ability to adapt quickly to market transformations. This requires, in particular, the ability to develop, protect, and exploit the best ideas emerging from public research, notably through commercialization and sound intellectual property management. The economies that stand out are those that innovate the most, among other things by proactively capitalizing on their research investments,” emphasizes Jesse Vincent-Herscovici, President and CEO of Axelys.
The funds announced in Finance Minister Eric Girard’s budget are in addition to the $18 million recently awarded to Axelys by the Quebec Ministry of Economy, Innovation, and Energy (MEIE) as part of the renewal of its operating support agreement for the next two years. This funding will enable the organization to continue its mission: contributing to Quebec’s economic and social prosperity by accelerating the development and transfer of high-potential innovations stemming from public research.
This support helps strengthen Quebec’s ability to fully leverage its scientific knowledge by facilitating the transfer of knowledge to businesses, organizations, and society.
“Quebec has remarkable scientific potential. Commercialization ensures that discoveries resulting from research generate tangible benefits for Quebec’s economy and society,” adds Jesse Vincent-Herscovici.
Axelys will continue its work, hand in hand with public research institutions across Quebec, ecosystem partners, and all economic and social stakeholders, to maximize the benefits of public research for the benefit of all Quebecers.
