The Innovation Readiness Level (IRL): A Framework for Guiding the Development of Innovations Emerging from Public Research and Scientific Entrepreneurship

Axelys’ mission is to contribute to Quebec’s economic and social prosperity by accelerating the development and transfer of high-potential innovations stemming from Quebec’s public research. With this in mind, Axelys teams are constantly seeking to improve their innovation management practices to better support the progression of these innovations toward tangible benefits for society.

The development of innovations stemming from public research is, however, a complex and uncertain process. Between scientific discovery and the commercialization of a viable solution, numerous obstacles can hinder the transformation of knowledge into concrete applications. This reality underscores the importance of having tools to better characterize the progress of innovation projects and guide the strategic decisions that accompany their development.

This document is part of that effort. It presents an adaptation of the Innovation Readiness Level (IRL) model, a multidimensional evaluation framework designed to better understand and guide the progress of innovations stemming from public research and scientific entrepreneurship.
