Intellectual property, a lever for productivity and economic sovereignty
The issue of productivity is increasingly in the public eye, particularly in light of recent analyses highlighting the decline in the country’s standard of living. In an article published in The Globe and Mail and signed by Dan Herman, then CEO of Intellectual Property Ontario, and Jesse Vincent-Herscovici, President and CEO of Axelys, the authors point out that Canada imports almost twice as many intellectual property-based products and services as it exports, an imbalance that hinders our competitiveness and limits our ability to generate value from innovations developed here.
The article highlights an undeniable reality for any innovation ecosystem: national productivity depends on better protection and commercialization of publicly funded research results. Without a robust strategy to transform this research into economic assets, ideas created in Canada risk benefiting foreign players rather than Canadian companies.
For Axelys, this reflection confirms the importance of continuing and amplifying our efforts with research institutions, researchers, and all partners in the ecosystem. Accelerating the creation of impact from public research also means strengthening Quebec and Canada’s ability to remain competitive in a rapidly changing global context.
